With this hybrid installation, the Viamed San José hospital in Alcantarilla will save 20 tons of CO2 annually into the environment
Together with the hydrogen generated for the boiler, the system produces oxygen for medical uses in the hospital itself
BAXI, a leading brand in air conditioning in Spain and Portugal, has reached a new milestone in the sector with the start-up of the first 100% hydrogen boiler in the Iberian Peninsula in a functional installation. This installation is part of a pioneering sustainability project in the hospital sector that the Viamed Salud group has launched at its Viamed San José Hospital, located in Alcantarilla (Murcia).
This new installation entails an annual saving of 20 tons of CO2. Additionally, during the electrolysis process, together with hydrogen, oxygen is produced that will also be used for medical uses in the hospital itself.
This brings environmental benefits by eliminating current road transport and the CO2 emissions derived from the supply of this vital element for the hospital. Consequently, in addition to this initiative becoming a benchmark for sustainability due to its reduction in the carbon footprint, it is also a benchmark for self-sufficiency for this essential sector of society.
Mariano Tur Riera, Head of Product for Domestic Boilers at BAXI, says that “In short, we are faced with a totally new and highly innovative initiative where BAXI technicians and the Técnicas Reunidas engineering company have developed a hybrid thermal generation solution that consumes natural gas and green hydrogen previously obtained through photovoltaic electrical energy generated on site. Due to its conception, the elements resulting from electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen, are fully valued, and, in this way, the investment made is optimized while reducing its amortization period.
One more step towards making hydrogen a real alternative
The BDR Thermea Group, to which BAXI belongs, leads the research and development of the use of hydrogen in heating and DHW applications. Proof of this is the presence of the world’s first production line dedicated to this type of boiler, located at the BAXI factory in Bassano Del Grappa (Italy). At the end of 2022, in the east of the Netherlands, a world-first pilot project was also launched, involving the use of 100% hydrogen boilers to supply heating to 12 inhabited single-family homes built in the early 20th century. Each of the houses is equipped with a pure hydrogen boiler that generates zero carbon emissions. The hydrogen is produced and fed into the existing gas network in a nearby industrial area.
