Guidance in the Educational Systems of Our Region: An Essential Perspective

To speak of education today without addressing educational and career guidance is to only go halfway. In a context marked by the transformation of the labor market, the emergence of new professions, and the need to make increasingly earlier decisions, guidance becomes a key element in building coherent and sustainable educational pathways.

In this vein, I would like to share the publication “Guidance in the Educational Systems of Our Region: A Comparative Analysis from a Supranational Perspective,” prepared by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the FUAM (Autonomous University of Madrid Foundation). This rigorous document offers a comparative view of how different countries approach lifelong guidance and what lessons we can learn to improve our own systems.

The study focuses on fundamental aspects such as:

The strategic role of guidance in preventing school dropout.

The importance of stable and professionalized guidance models.

The connection between guidance, employability, and Vocational Training.

The need for a supranational vision to identify transferable best practices.

From my experience in Vocational Training and Dual Vocational Training, this analysis reinforces an idea I have championed for years: without quality guidance, there are no well-informed decisions, nor are there training pathways aligned with people’s talents, interests, and abilities. And therefore, there is no truly equitable education system.

This document is especially recommended for guidance counselors, teachers, school management teams, educational authorities, and social partners, but also for families and students who want to better understand how other countries are addressing this challenge.

Investing in guidance is not an expense; it is a strategic investment in people, talent, and the future.
